What are directory listings?

Directory listings are local business listings, or websites, that lists your law firm’s name, address and phone number, along with any other relevant information that can be beneficial for your clients.

Directory listings amplify your local search engine results and give you greater visibility. You need to ensure your directory listings have relevant information that search engines would pick up and serve to your clients when searched.

Directory listings also require regular updates, therefore it is not a set and forget process.

Commonly when you have an active SEO program, directory listings are part of the SEO strategy. However, if you don’t currently have any SEO, adding your law firm’s details to various directory listings can positively impact your local SEO rankings for the better.

Should you only submit your business to industry-specific listings?

The answer to this question lies in the quality of the directory listing itself. Google really wants to see only relevant and trustworthy websites linking to you. So regardless of whether they are industry-specific listings or not, the quality and relevancy of the directory listing are what matters.

Long-established and trusted directory listings are worth listing on your website. Having high-quality directory listings helps your SEO effort significantly.

Are directory listings free?

There are a number of free directories that are worth having your website listed on, however, there are some that simply don’t have the authority or the traffic to put time and energy into. Examples of some free listings that are worth looking at include Bing Places, Yell, Yelp and Cylex.

It may also be worth looking at paid directories, only if the directory is relevant and has a high authority within your industry. Start by identifying which directories your competitors are listed on, if a large percentage of them have listings on paid directories it will be worthwhile to do the same.
